Rain Sensing Wiper System for Unimpeded Vision While Driving

Wiper system is used to clear windshields from rain, ice, dust, and other unwanted materials. It is an integral part of almost all the commercial and passenger vehicles and trains.Wiper systems are mainly divided into traditional and rain sensing systems. Traditional systems need to be manually operated by the vehicle driver. Advancements in sensor technology may influence their adoption by vehicle manufacturers.

Aero Wipers

Volkswagen recently launched this product that is designed for fast and consistent wiping quality. These wipers create less noise compared to the conventional wipers. They can provide the same wiping quality even when the vehicle is moving at a high speed. Blades of this wiping system have a better drag coefficiency and less weight that can aid in reducing CO2. The wiper arm can put an additional downforce on blade without applying extra force to clean the windscreen. The large wiper pattern of this wiper system can provide a satisfactory result in dry weather and during heavy rain fall.

Rain Sensing System

The company has also launched a rain sensor device. It gets activated by rainfall. For instance, this can automatically adjusts the speed of wiping with respect to the intensity of rain. This sensor is designed in such a way that minor damage from windscreen or dust does not affect its functionality. The sensor is fixed in the interior mirror stand, which consists of numerous infrared LEDs and central photodiode. The light released by LEDs is mirrored by windshield on the photo sensor. So, if the sensor receives less light it means there are more drops on the windshield. Further, this information is conveyed to an electric control unit so as to adjust wiping intervals.

Market Overview

According to Grand View Research, Inc.; the global wiper system market is anticipated to achieve over USD 11.07 billion by 2025. Increasing production of vehicles can boost the demand during the forecast period (2014 to 2025). Developing road infrastructure and increased disposable income in emerging countries can boost the demand for vehicles.

In 2016, traditional wiper system dominated the overall market. Low maintenance cost and easy repair are some of the key factors that drive their installation. Rain sensing wipers on the other hand are anticipated to witness increased installation from the small car segment. Their ability to increase esthetic value of vehicles can boost the growth over the forecast period.

Asia Pacific may dominate the global market during the forecast period owing to rise in production in China and India. Key players operating in the worldwide market include Trico Products, PMP Auto Components Private Limited, MITSUBA, Robert Bosch GmbH, and Valeo S.A.
