Can Millimeter Wave (MMW) Technology Make 5G Possible?

Fiber-optic cables were predominantly used for data transmission and online content. However, the need to access Internet at a high speed has led to the development of Millimeter Wave (MMW) technology.

Deep Dive into MMW

MMW are the radio waves that operate in the frequencies of 30 gigahertz (GHz) to 300 GHz. This is a step-up from 4G technologies that operate at 6 GHz. Millimeter waves can penetrate thorough most materials, fabrics, and against environmental deterrents like fog or smoke. Apart from the primary uses in satellite and radar systems, MMW is also used in security, astronomy, medical, and telecommunication sectors. Advent of 5G, which promises high data transmission speeds with minimum delay, can be ascribed for this advancement.

This technology can power up households in the range of 10 meters to 100 meters using small cells.

High Power Radios

Recently, Siklu Communication Ltd., an Israeli company; decided to implement millimeter wave (MMW) technology in Bradford City of the United Kingdom. This technology can power up E-band police radios and transmit electromagnetic waves on an uninterrupted spectrum. It can enable the use of 24 traffic radios and 300 surveillance cameras for security surveillance of the city. The company plans to use 80 GHz E-band radios to create a backhaul wireless network that has data transmission capacity up to 1 GB.

MMW for 5G

In April 2017, Facebook, Inc., successfully tested the 5G technology with the help of millimeter wave. It managed to achieve 36 Gbps data transmission with the help of a stationary MMW link from the ground to a circling Cessna plane. Recently, the Transport Security Administration, a division of Homeland Security, used MMW scanners to detect contraband at airports. Millimeter waves also find applications in medical therapy to alleviate pain.

Market Overview

According to a report by Grand View Research, Inc.; the worldwide millimeter wave (MMW) technology market is anticipated to attain nearly USD 8.7 billion by 2025. It is expected to register a significant CAGR over the forecast period (2014 to 2025). Rapid technological advancements and the emergence of high-bandwidth applications can impel the expansion till 2025. Increased infrastructural projects to cater to the demand of high-speed networks can further support the market growth.

Telecommunication equipment led the overall market with over 60% share in 2015. Integration at airports can propel the demand in the forthcoming years. Military & defense applications may exhibit over 43% CAGR during the forecast period. Key players operating in the worldwide market are Bridgewave Communications, Inc.; Siklu Communication Ltd.; Aviat Networks, Inc.; and E-band Communications LLC.
